I Am Poem Project

OVERVIEW

The “I Am Poem” is a template-based poem that requires students to represent themselves in the form of poetry as well as in visual form. The “I Am Poem” is a structured way for students to begin to find their voice, and communicate with others. In this project students will create a typographic composition using the “I Am poem” in Photoshop, the Photoshop composition will then be imported into Adobe After Effects to create a Kinetic Typography animation.

OBJECTIVES

  • Create a Typographic composition with a poem.
  • Demonstrate how to import a Photoshop composition into Adobe After Effects
  • Demonstrate how to animate a Photoshop composition in Adobe After Effect

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. From the discussion, write your own I Am poems, following the guidelines on the handout. Use the template resources available here.
  2. Open Photoshop and create a new Film and Video document with the HDTV 1080P settings. (See Image)
  3. Fill background with a soft texture of your choice.
  4. Type your poem line by line. Each line of the Poem should be on a separate layer.
  5. The Photoshop file is ready to import into After Effects.
  6. Launch After Effects and Import the Photoshop File…File>Import>Editable Layer Styles
  7. Import as>Composition-Cropped Layers. (You will see your file in the project tab)
  8. Double click the file icon to load into the timeline. (You will see your text in the timeline)
  9. Select the text layers in timeline. Click on your text layers and select Make Text Editable (Layer>Convert to Editable Text). Now your text will be fully editable within After Effects
  10. This is where Presets come in handy. Navigate to the Effects and Presets menu, and down toPresets>Text folder. There are many Text Effects to choose from. Choose a text effect and simply drag it onto your text layer.
  11. Experiment with text effects to accomplish your desired results.
  12. Save the file as: IAM_(YourInitials)

ASSESSMENT

You will be graded according to the following criteria to earn a total of 30 points:

  • Project turned on time. (5 pts)
  • All files set up and saved in correct format. (5 pts)
  • Effective use of Photoshop tools (selection tools, blending tools, layers). (5 pts)
  • Quality of work and Photoshop techniques, originality, imagination, detail and overall visual effect – Elements of collage create visual unity, proportion of elements, color balance,..   (5 pts)
  • Overall design is visually appealing. (5 pts)
  • Student always uses classroom project time well. Conversations are primarily focused on the project and things needed to get the work done and are held in a manner that typically does not disrupt others. (5 pts)
