Polygonal Animal Project

OVERVIEW

You have been hired as a graphic designer by The Philadelphia Zoo.  They want you to create a colorful graphic animal graphic, using shapes for a geometric theme.  Once complete then you should review the checklist for grading criteria before turning in your work.

OBJECTIVE

Use Illustrator’s tools, menus, and palettes to create a complex vector logo with polygonal shapes.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Create a Colorful Polygonal Animal by selecting an image of animal online and then using polygonal shapes and triangles to design a colorful animal shape recreation   Challenge yourself to include gradients, feathering, or transparency. 
  2. You will be graded on a difficulty rating based on your illustrator technique and attention to detail as well as your creativity.  See the examples for ideas.  Your image size is 800px width and 600px height.  
  3. Save your completed graphic as a AI (Illustrator file) and then export as a PNG file.  Label it as PolyProject_(first and last Initial) (ex. polproject_SG.png) and save in the network drive.  Submit the PNG file as well as the Illustrator file.

ASSESSMENT

You will be graded according to the following criteria to earn a total of 50 points:
Animal was outlined with the pen tool, incorporating various shapes, and has non original background image incorporated into the final project _____
Background color OR gradient was applied to allow the chosen animal to pop, or stand out _____
The entire animal portrait is filled in with polygonal shapes, completely flushed with one another (no gaps or spacing) _____
Animal is large, fills the composition accurately and is still proportioned (not stretched) _____
Polygonal shapes are angular and created within varying colors to achieve details of the chosen animal _____
Polygonal shapes are filled in with the average colors from the original photos, NOT a color chosen by the student _____
Animal created is easy to depict _____
Images size is 800 x 600 pixels and final graphic file is submitted as a PNG and AI format with the instructed name for the project _____
Overall composition is creative, shows an interesting and unique composition, shows good craftsmanship and high effort throughout entire process _____
Student always uses classroom project time well. Conversations are primarily focused on the project and things needed to get the work done and are held in a manner that typically does not disrupt others. _____
