Chapter 3: Working with Selections

At the end of this chapter, you should be able to describe the strengths and limitations of the Photoshop selection tools, demonstrate how to transform a selection, and accurately distinguish between the pixels within a selection and the selection itself.

Exercise 1

Objective

You will be selecting parts of an image and moving them around to create a new image.

  • Learn how to use the Photoshop selection tools.
  • Make appropriate crops using the Crop tool.

Instructions

  1. Download the file here.
  2. Open Flag.jpg in Photoshop.
  3. Using the Quick Select tool, remove the background behind the flag, so only the flag is showing on a white background.
  4. Save the image.
  5. Download the file here. (Unzip the file)
  6. Open BlueButterfly.psd in Photoshop.
  7. Using the Magic Wand tool, remove the background behind the butterfly (including the shadows), so only the butterfly is showing on the leaves layer behind the butterfly.
  8. Save the image.
  9. Submit both files in the network drive in a folder named Chapter3Ex1_(YourInitials).

You will be selecting parts of an image and moving them around to create a new image.

Instructions

  1. Download the file here.
  2. Open the potatoehead.jpg in Photoshop.
  3. You will see when you open the file, a potato is on the right and different limbs and small accessories on the left. Your job is to take the different limbs and accessories and move them on the potato using the different selection tools.
  4. You will move the different objects onto the potato to create a Mr. or Ms. Potato head that has eyes, ears, arms, and feet, as well as some accessories. Use the selection tools you learned in class in order to move the objects onto the potato in a clean and neat fashion.
  5. Once you have completed your potato head, crop the image so only your new image is showing.
  6. Save your file.
  7. Submit the file in the network drive in a folder named Chapter3Ex2_(YourInitials).
